Windows Server 2008 and Exchange Review

For all of you who are looking to implement a new server in the coming months, I find no reason for you to delay implementing a Windows Server 2008 network with Exchange 2007. Windows server 2003 R2 is still readily available from popular hardware vendors like Dell & HP, but the feature & role improvements as well as its compatibility with Windows XP SP3 & Windows Server 2003 make Windows Server 2008 a safe and more up-to-date solution for your business network.

Windows server 2008 brings some great enhancements to long seen Windows server technologies as well as adds some great new features. Hyper-V is the new Microsoft Virtualization technology built into the operating system as a role that adds the ability for virtual computers to run on top of the existing computer at the same time as the normal operating system without a performance decrease. The normal computer is called the parent partition and each virtual computer is called a child partition. Hyper-V adds a thin layer of software to the computer that starts before the parent partition giving the parent and child computers equal access to the computer hardware. This in effect makes multiple computers out of one. This can be helpful to decrease the number of physical machines you need while at the same time maintaining the performance you desire. It also provides a place to test applications and gives you a great platform for server backup. Exchange 2007 brings many features on top of the already great 2003.

Top 10 reasons for MS Exchange Server

*Centralized Address Lists: All of your employees are automatically added.

*Centralized Groups: Groups of users organized by Department or Function.

*Public Folders: Public Folders are centralized folders that can be accessed by all employees

*Out of Office Assistant: a simple tool for when you are out of the office.

*Outlook Web Access: A Web browser based version of Outlook

*All the data is stored on the server: no email loss if PC goes down.

*Allows each of your users to have has many email addresses as they want.

*Company can have multiple domains: @bigcompany.com @goodcompany.com

*Other users can monitor your calendar or email: if you want them to.

*Meeting Planner: the calendar feature allow you to invite others for scheduled event.

Nokia e71x

I recently assisted a client with the purchase of a new cell phone. One of his employees "had to have" an iPhone (largely understandable) so the carrier was AT&T by default. Unless we wanted to take a chance on a reconditioned phone which we did not. This user had been a blackberry user for years and liked the physically raised buttons instead of the flat touch screen. After looking at a number of phones I recommended the Nokia e71x. We haven seen Nokia for awhile. This phone met my clients needs with raised buttons, blue tooth for safe driving and business class email. Connecting his domain name to RkMs hosted exchange server was a snap. SSL and all took under a minute "Unlike a Blackberry". What lead to my recommendation was the construction. With other manufactures chasing the design of the iPhone, Nokia is on target. The sleek design and solid construction has the feel of real quality.

Pro: Design, durability, raised buttons, business class email and all the music functionality. Reasonable price $99 with 2 year contract.

Cons: ?

Recommendation: I'll wait to see how my client likes his phone but for now I recommend this phone.

Blade Servers

As a network engineer I am always interested in Data Center implementation. The data center is where all the “big iron” hides, crunching and storing data at a dull roar in a room that most people never see. With the demand for energy efficiency the blade server is in need of redesigning. The new metric of data center design is energy consumption. Historically when I have worked with large company data centers for multinational engineering companies or 911 centers the concerns was not space or power consumption but raw power and stability. The dollar amount was a lesser concern and energy consumption was of no concern. Blade servers were a big help with space. Recent studies have found that blade servers will probably need to develop energy efficiencies or fall by the way side. A recent study by APC (American Power Conversion) finds that current blade servers are power hungry and run hot.

RkM is currently designing “Private Cloud” solutions that runs cool and smart with less power consumption. A private cloud combines internet access to company data that is easily migrated and scalable. Private cloud solutions maximize energy savings and data access. Raw data crunching and reliability remains and ROA increases. RkM plans to provide a “Private Cloud” solution to meet these needs by the end of the summer 2009. This solution will provide low power consumption, VoIP telephone services, SQL, remote access for employees, virtual servers and corporate grade email for businesses with fewer than 100 employees. This fits RkMs mission of getting the "Right information to the Right person at the Right time".

What are the benefits of VoIP?

There are many benefits to having a VoIP solution, for example:

  • One low monthly fee covers all of your phone calls.
  • There are no unexplained taxes or regulatory fees. You know the ones on your current bill that nobody understands and your local phone provider can explain. No taxes are charged for Internet based phone calls which is one reason why the service is so cheap.
  • Long distance and international calling are much cheaper. The Internet does not care whether you e calling someone who lives a block away or your cousin in Australia. This is why the RkM can give you such great rates for long distance and international calls.

What features can VoIP give me?

The features available with RkM VoIP service are incredible.

Your voice, which is an analog signal, is converted into small packets of digital data and sent over your Broadband Internet connection to your VoIP service provider. This digital data is perfect for the Internet and it means your service provider can do many things with it such as:

  • Store incoming calls to voice mail if you do not want to be disturbed by the telephone.
  • 3-way calling.
  • Offer caller ID and call waiting. These features are free. You would normally need to pay for the privilege with a local phone provider.

There are many other cool features that VoIP offers and it should be remembered that this technology is growing fast so the possibilities are endless.

Check out our Denverâs best VoIP page to see the plan features of all the different plans on our website and get the information you need to choose a VoIP solution today.

Are there any disadvantages with a VoIP solution?

Although most VoIP service providers have Emergency 911 there are still a few that do not. RkM does this.

The biggest disadvantage that skeptics will throw at you is what happens when your power goes out or you lose your Broadband Internet connection. You see VoIP relies on having a broadband connection so if that goes down so does your Internet phone service. However, in the rare occasions that power does go down, most of us have cell phones, is this really a big issue?

What equipment do I need for VoIP service?

To make a VoIP call the only additional piece of equipment that a typical setup will need is an Analog Telephone Adaptor (or ATA). This piece of equipment is usually somewhat confusing and must work with your firewall. RkM VoIP does not need the ATA box. In fact the RkM VoIP phone service can be plugged into any network connection and used. In the hotel room, on the road even right from your laptop.

This allows you to make phone calls as normal.

A typical residential VoIP solution looks like this:

10th Mountain Phone System

Hello my name is Thad Cummins. I’m a local business owner just like you. Times are tough for some of our fellow business friends. I hope you’re doing great. But some of my buddies are doing just Okay.

Now I served overseas in an infantry unit in panama. I remember slogging through the jungle and mango swamps. Back then I had to relie on my buddies and they relied on me. Sometimes your boots would get stuck in the muck and silt. And without your buddy you might not get out. At least not with both boots. But I digress.

After hearing some of my friends complain about tough times I thought - how can I help my buddies? I own a tech company. I should be able to figure something out.

And I have.

It’s a dynamic telephone system. My telephone invention – invented right here in Denver – scales to the phone lines used. Meaning – if you use two lines during the month. You pay for two lines. If you use 6 lines – you pay for six. You pay for use. It’s simple. I like simple.

It saves money with no loss of service.

Other phone providers either limit the lines you use or charge you for lines you don’t use. This is the way it’s always been. But if you only pay for what you need. That’s a good thing. Lets say in a given month you close a large contract and you need to get everyone on deck to hammer out the details – you have all the lines you need. Maybe it’s four. Maybe its 10. It doesn’t matter. It scales to use.

You pay for what you use. This is my idea to help fellow business people.

I call it the 10th Mountain Phone system. Call for it today. 303.691.3711. I was in the 10th Mountain Infantry in Panama. When I first arrived in Denver I thought hey - I got a bunch of friends out here. So I walked up to somes guys with a 10th mountain license plate – all excited and said “when were you in the 10th mountain?” Turns out Coloradans like the 10th Mountain because when the 10th Mountain returned from WWII they started the ski industry. I met a lot of nice people but I've stopped bothering people in the parking lots.

Anyway, call me. The 10th Mountain Phone system sets me apart and it will set your business apart. 303.691.3711 Call me about the 10th Mountain Phone System or email me at support@rkmtec.com.

EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition

EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition

It is rare that I write about my network engineers tool box. I am breaking my own rule because this software is so well engineered it is one of those rare technologies that resolves a big problem reliably and easily.

One of the more problematic situations for a Nerwork Engineer is the dreaded "partition pinch." Most people never think of the "partition pinch" at their small buisness but it can bring a server to its knees quick. No room for the paging file generates symptoms of slowness and occasional application hang. Unless your company has managed services or notices that the server is running slow, needs rebooting often and calls an IT company like RkMTEc.com 303-691-3711 in time a company can learn the value of the business network and EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition.

The Value is "How much does it cost to have your computer services down?" and 1) not process new business 2) not get quotes to clients that only accept paperless correspondence, 3) or have clients that only pay based on email attachement 4) cancel a video conferences for project management 5) delay sending legal documents to the court sytem (which is required by law for law enforcement professionals 6) execute banking transactions online 7) get pricing for material 8) etc. A more simple approach is to look at the entire years revenue and devide the number of production days per year. Heres a common point of reference. 2080 working hours a year per employee. (2080hrsr/yr)/(8hrs/day) = 260 days.

For every $1 million in revenue each day of work is $3,846.15.

The argument against this number is that somedays the business generates more than others. That is true. Shipping may be delayed a day or two and you may not lose a client. The report can arrive a couple days late. The Client will wait an extra day or two for you to get the $50,000 proposal on their desk on time. OK - all your clients are cool and have time to burn. Maybe.

The bottom line is all things remaining equal depending on the variables of your cash flow and sales you may be losing much more or much less than the estimated economic loss.

Thats why I love EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition. I haven been this happy with a product since partition magic on my Novell 4.11 server. Thanks Easeus. I have helped many clients with "partition pinch". EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition has never let me down. Without EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition I was left doing sector by sector rebuilds of the master boot record. I don know if you know what fun is but sector rebuilds are not fun. Just thinkning about it makes me a little ill. I don know if you have ever felt the pressure of knowing if the wrong hex is used and causes a file allocation problem and your clients employees keep stopping by to let you know that they have large contract that must get out today and Jane hasn changed the tape backup for a month because she no longer works for the company. Sadness my friends sadness. I don like to think about it. Thanks again Easeus.

HP Officejet Pro 8500

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier All-in-One Printer

What the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier All-in-One Printer Teaches Us About American Business

HP has formidable printer pedigree. Hewlett-Packard was the leader of the printing world in the 1990s. Comparable to the Mercedes Benz diesels of printing. “Unstoppable and unkillable printing machines” Like many of you I remember these products. HP quality appears to be back with the Officejet Pro 8500. I installed an HP Officejet Pro 8500 at a client and was impressed with the features and still more impressed with the solid feel and design. Thank you Steve Jobs for helping America understand that design is not only for Italians. In addition, this printer actually has metal as part of the housing. Yeah -– metal foundation pins. The software was fabulous and intuitive. The interface is technical enough for network engineers and easy enough for the marketing department. The Officejet Pro 8500 strikes a nice balance. It is clear that this product was thought through on multiple levels. The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier All-in-One Printer constitutes an excellent choice for an office of 10 medium demand users.

So what happened with HP? Lets start with the "Most Powerful Businesswoman in 1998" as declared by Forbes magazine. Remember this is Forbes saying this in 1998 about Carly Fioirna. There was a lot of grumbling from HP employees at this time and a lot of excitement about the Compaq merger on wall street. Does anyone remember the HP1100? What a sad product. It was clear what was going on. Carly had decided to Ponzi the branding of HP. Lower quality and exploit the trust of the HP consumer. I remember struggling with the HP1100 and thinking, HP is no longer HP. HP printing stumbled under Carly Fiorina due to her affection for bureaucratic politics (which she learned at AT&T) and her lack of technical credentials save her experiments in technical espionage on the HP board. If your CEO has little technical knowledge outside the sales office, spends her time spying on the board and cuts the quality of the product, what is her focus? Her focus is the exponential bonuses players like Carly and investment bankers get from multi-billion dollar mergers like Comaq and HP. So heres the moral of the story for American Business, if your nation puts capital into bankers, bureaucratic politicians and finance majors you will not see Adam Smiths invisible hand at work you will see avarice and lowered quality of product. This is what Adam Smith may have called the Poverty of Nations.

Good News: HP is producing a good product again with the HP Officejet Pro 8500. No thanks to Carly.

The Bad News: America rewards business leaders like Carly.

Suggestions: Value quality and design. Its were the blue markets are.

Engineering Auto Review

ALFA ROMEO 169 - Designed for the Middle Class in Italy

"Ask you girlfriend or wife what she thinks of this car."

I think its important to look at engineering in different fields to keep a perspective on computer engineering. After all,

engineering affects how we work and live. I recently wrote an article for Business Week Auto review. I think my article highlights

the importance of good computer engineering and engineering as a whole. Email me and let me know your thoughts.

The article was a response to the possible entry of Alfa Romeo Automobiles into the US market. Most reviewers

were negative about Italian cars entering the US.

David Welch of Business Week has not posted this article and has not contacted me. Ask him why david_welch@businessweek.com

________

Well where to begin. Alfa Romeo has the legacy, craftsmanship and sweet life “Dolce Vita” Americans’ need in their life.

I am guessing few readers or writers have ever driven an Alfa. I challenge any American to drive an Alfa in the city and on

the highway and get out without a smile on their face. And how can this be – It starts with culture. The Italians live in the

land were the word ‘tech’ means practical beauty. Italian engineering is an art form where daily necessities are a joy to

have. This is a difficult balance and foreign to many Americans. For legacy - the founder of Ferrari was an Alfa Romeo

mechanic. He left Alfa because Alfa had decided to market to the middle class. Problems with Alfa Romeos are the same

as with Dodge Caravans. Why do 70% of Dodge Caravans burn oil? Because mom never changes the oil. It’s not a

mechanical problem. It’s a maintenance issue. Alfa Romeo’s are a performance vehicle. If you don’t take care of it, it will

not perform. I will admit my 1987 Milano was sketchy at best in snow with Piriellis and rear wheel drive. But on a clear

day and dry roads she held the road like a low flying bird. The suspension was as comfortable as a Buick and as certain

as a BMW. While cleaning the fire breathing snake on the grill neighbors would ask about the car. It was pleasing to the

eye. It’s amazing what a little more attention to a craft can do for the benefit of ownership. There is more to life than ponzi

finance. I say cheating your neighbor is not good form and there is honor in designing “tech” as the Greeks did and the

Italians do. As you may have well guessed, I welcome Alfa Romeo to America and look forward to a little more “Dolce

Vita” in American culture.

New study suggests U.S. recovery may be 2017?

Cummins Political Research Group

Nov 2009, T. Cummins Author

Executive Summary

It appears current trends support growing and accelerating economic deprivation for more

Americans. We can only hope the upturn at the end of the Bush Administrations trend line (as seen above) is a ‘marker’

for a strong and impending downward poverty trend. History does not support this hopeful thinking. Recoveries, like

cleaning up after war usually last longer than the war itself. Another reasonable understanding of the situation is that it’s

usually easier to destroy something than it is to build something. Therein lays the problem. If one believes those 8 years of

poor management has earned ‘just deserts’, the recovery will be longer than 8 years. Complicating factors include a

management drought in the private and public sectors, brain drain, labor misallocation and political skullduggery.

Moreover, it is clear that private management is at-risk of poor decision making based on a strong bias toward a Lassie

Faire philosophy held by the current masters of industry. The brain power of America’s best and brightest largely

gravitates to the finance degrees. This leaves America poorly prepared for nation building abroad or for that matter at

home. A sophisticated economy doesn’t just appear in Adam Smith’s hand. Experienced and knowledgeable

management must guide everyday affairs in both the public and private sectors. These skills are not developed in the

unemployment lines. In addition, not only are educated and motivated people moving out of the workforce, but many are

crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to find a better life. Building an economy is building a culture and it takes effort,

planning and cooperation. Finally, as stated earlier the upper management in the government will retire in the next 10 years

and few of their positions have been released to the next generation of management for apprenticeships. Both of these

trends do not bode well for a ‘recovery curve’ similar to the Clinton years. All things remaining equal, a most likely

recovery would extrapolation to 2017 for achieving Clinton era levels of poverty. The final rail baring this may be the role

played by high powered mass communication consultants. These were successfully employed by Rove and the neo-cons

against Gore and McCain to devastating results. These Republican based countermeasures will slow recovery. Neo-Con

communication, psychological and financial methods are more evolved than the Democrats. A safe bet are Neo-Con

efforts will incur 20% increase in project duration and therefore increase the costs of success for any Obama plan.

(http://www.mybudget360.com/35-million-americans-on-food-stamps-12-percent-of-us- population-on-food-stamps-

highest-since-records-kept-in-1969/.) In conclusion, the recovery will take many more years. Save a philosophical

change in the Republican platform and/or new wealth generating markets. It is likely the American Standard of living will

slide. Without new positive trends the earliest recovery will take until 2015 and the latest 2026 if ever. America is headed

for years of working hard and not getting ahead. This is contrary to the expectations held by many Americans. The impact

of a new belief system based on long term hardship is unknown.

This area warrants more study.
